Interprets historical transformations which began in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe and continue in North American society, including the rise of the modern state, the multifarious formations of identities and the continuously changing mechanics of maintaining identities as new ideas challenge the family, everyday life practices, networks of loyalty, and motivational patterns.
