AFBL 290-02 (Spring) - Affirmative Action Around the World Although there may be obvious similarities between the contours of affirmative action practiced in the United States and other countries, each is likely to take fundamentally different approaches concerning the degree to which they permit affirmative action in order to reduce inequality based on multiple immutable characteristics, including race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and creed, among others. The central aim of this course is to explore the extent to which the US and other countries promote substantive racial equality by the use of affirmative action, with special emphasis on people of African descent. This global comparison is intended to identify, and provide explanations for, the commonalities and dissimilarities in the affirmative action models adopted around the world.
