HIST 343 - Gender, Family, & Community Life in Latin America Examines the category of gender in Latin America from the mid-1400s to the mid- 1800s. Explores the colonial construction of ideas of femininity and masculinity, how gendered roles influenced the formation of indigenous, Iberian, and African societies, and how colonization affected attitudes toward love and sexual desire. The prisms of family and community life will serve as case studies for understanding social identities and institutional power structures.
