PHIL 340 - Contemporary Social Philosophy

This course first surveys political philosophies in the Western philosophical tradition that assume the perspective of a society settled on indigenous lands and built on colonial structures of sex, gender, and race, prizing individual liberties or economic classes. Social philosophies, by contrast, begin with peoples in their historical contexts. The ‘racial contract’ analyses a system of global European domination. Indigenous decolonization philosophy addresses sovereignty and struggles for self-determination in the face of dispossession of lands, culture and language. Feminist decolonization philosophy begins from multiple understandings of oppressions and resistances seeking coalition with other women.
