The Gender Studies program offers an interdisciplinary minor to explore gender formations contextually as they intersect with other relations of power such as “race/ethnicity,” class, sexuality, socio-cultural and geographic location. Gender Studies courses reflect the vitality of recent scholarship in feminist, postcolonial, queer, and gay and lesbian studies. Disciplinary perspectives as diverse as history, philosophy, the literary arts, anthropology and the range of social sciences from child development to psychology focus on an assortment of historical and contemporary women’s experiences and writings, theories of gender construction and of identity, and avenues of civic engagement and of empowerment. Engaged in such resolutely interdisciplinary learning, students develop skills and analytic methods through classroom learning, with opportunities for research and fieldwork, internships, and community partnerships.
