Graduate Teaching Credential Prerequisites
Prerequisite coursework is typically completed while earning your undergraduate degree.
Child Development
Complete one of the following:
United States Constitution
Complete one of the following:
Basic Skills Requirement
Complete one of the following:
- Pass the California Basic Education Skills Exam (CBEST)
- Obtain sufficient score on either a CSU Placement Test, Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) score
- Complete qualifying college-level coursework from a regionally accredited institution of higher education if specific conditions are met.
- A combination of coursework and examination options. Such mixing of options may only be done by candidates enrolled in a Commission-approved preparation program that allows for this option.
Multicultural Education Requirement
Subject Matter Requirement
Complete one of the following:
- Pass appropriate sections of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers
- Successful completion of coursework, as verified by a Commission-approved program of professional preparation that addresses each of the Commission-adopted domains of the applicable subject matter requirements.
- Successful completion of an academic major in the subject they will teach.
- A combination of coursework and examination options that meet or exceed the domains of the subject matter requirements. Such mixing of options may only be done by candidates enrolled in a Commission-approved preparation program that allows for this option.
